Fishers Spoiled for Choice in Gladstone Region

FOR those who know this region and the different spots to wet a line there is such a vast number of places to go and also species to catch.

From the harbour with the barra and the enormous king salmon out to the reef with those magic reds, trout, sweetlip, and mackerel, through to the inland systems like Awoonga, Callide, Monduran, and Cania Dams, for barra, mangrove jack, saratoga, bass, and in some spots we are seeing some pretty big longtoms being caught in Awoonga and in the Dawson River.

The local fishing pages on Facebook have seen some pretty good catches of black jew, mangrove jack and a snodger of a grunter measuring 69cm, which Thimoteus Newland caught and released this week, on a humble prawn bottom fishing.

I see Steven Strathdee spent some time out at Cania, and decided to walk the banks flicking stick baits around the snags and had a ball with the perch and bass.

The same thing applies with walking the banks of the Boyne - in "stealth mode" I call it - and targeting those snags which will hold barra, and jack.

In fact, you really don't need too much water for neither species, as the more shallow you get (Kermit the frog "knee deep") the more the little surface poppers, and walk the dog lures, come into play.

These predators will tend to sit, and wait in the lee of a rock, or gravel bank, as the water or tide comes in over the top, bringing with it some dinner, and it's these places you need to target.

To add another dimension, try fishing very light, say down to a 4-6 lb line, with an 8-10 lb leader, and only then the challenge commences.

This weekend is new moon Friday, with huge tides, nice balmy northerlies, and reasonably flat seas.

Tomorrow morning it looks as though the breeze could be down to 10 knots or a little less, from about sun up till around 2-3pm at the time of writing this.

It will swing around to the east after lunch, providing a very nice ride home if you venture out wide.

Sunday looks as though it'll be 10-15 easterlies all day, but that won't bother some.

The low tide around 4ish Saturday arvo is a big one though, and the likes of the Boyne Entrance will be practically unusable from 1 or 2 pm, and those using this access need to plan ahead.

For those chasing a feed of crabs, then this weekend should be awesome with some big chocolate bucks around at the moment, and coupled with the big tides you should be able to access some of those creeks, and drains which can't normally get to.

For those new to the region and keen to get into some crabbing, learning how this whole line of fishing works can be quite tricky and a good start to learn about the "art" of crabbing is to pick up a DVD of Johnny Mitchell's called the Mud Crab, at most tackle shops or via his website.

This year's Boyne Tannum HookUp being the 20th year, has now been open for entries for a little while and there is a steady flow of those booking their spot in this incredible event.

Having it back on the original weekend, being Queen's Birthday long weekend in June (6,7,8 ) is very cool.

And the committee, many of whom have been volunteering there time for many years now to bring you this extravaganza, are planning to blow you away beginning with that major prize boat from Curtis Coast Marine, Haines Signature, Suzuki, and Garmin.

You can't win this, nor any of the other nine boats if you aren't entered.

Entry is easy by simply going on line to www.boynetannumhookup.com.au and following the instructions.

Remember once it's full, it's full, but numbers are only restricted with senior entrants to 3000, whereas with the kids they are open to as many as they can get.

Finally share a thought for those at VMR Gladstone who diligently man the radios and the rescue boats, to help us out when things don't go the way we plan.

They are in constant need for volunteers on the radios. If you aren't a member then my best advice is to be one.

Harlem Globetrotters - The 2015 Australian Tour

Harlem Globetrotters - The 2015 Australian Tour
  • Sydney game: Thursday 18 June 2015
  • Melbourne game: Saturday 20 June 2015
  • Perth game: Sat 27 June 2015

Following on from the hugely successful 2013 tour of New Australia, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters are back by popular demand for a seven-city tour in June 2015.

The Harlem Globetrotters features some of the greatest athletes and entertainers on the planet, and they are bringing their unrivalled family experience to New Zealand and Australia as part of the Harlem Globetrotters 2015 “Washington Generals’ Revenge” World Tour.

The Globetrotters will face a great challenge this year, as the infamous Washington Generals are more determined than ever to match the franchise’s historic last victory over the Globetrotters in 1971.  It has been five years since the Globetrotters and Generals have faced off, as the Generals have been searching far and wide for the best players to retool their roster and have been preparing for one thing: victory over the Globetrotters.

We know there will be another positive response to the tour. They are great athletes and great ambassadors to sport for the whole family and word has got around about how entertaining they are. We are going to some new venues which will also be a buzz too,” said Suzanne Cannell, Tour Organiser from On The Road Events.

Sydney will put on its own glitz and glamour for the Globetrotters team with the game being held in the centre of the city at the Qantas Credit Union Arena on Thursday 18th June, followed by Melbourne on the 20th of June and Perth on the 27th of June.

Perth International Arts Festival 2015

As part of the line-up for the $22.4 million festival, World War I themes feature prominently, with giant puppets set to roam the streets and the stories of Indigenous soldiers presented on stage.

In total, more than 1,000 artists will feature in the festival's 63rd year.

"We're very fortunate this year that almost everyone we wanted to come to the festival has said yes, so actually the scale of it and the intensity of it is increased by the fact that people around the world, artists around the world really want to come and play in Perth," festival director Jonathan Holloway told the ABC.

"It's by far the largest festival Perth has had."

This is the fourth and last year Mr Holloway will sit as director of the festival, before handing over the reins to a yet to be announced successor.

His first festival included the grand spectacle of Place Des Anges, which saw high-wire performers dump nearly two tonnes of feathers on ecstatic crowds above St George's Terrace on a hot summer night in 2012.

He said while Perth audiences have always been "incredible", there was a courage and willingness to engage with performances that had emerged during his four years at the helm.

"We've seen them really engage in unusual and unexpected ways of connecting with arts," he said.

"Whether that be through iPads, or under feathers or on the beach at dawn, whether that be rolling about with death in wheat, or breaking bread with deaf-blind Israeli performers, it's been an audience all along that's really taking creative risk

A Word from the Director:

My four Festivals as Artistic Director in Perth have been about two things – stories and experiences

The stories have spanned millennia and have explored who we are, where we have come from, our current situation and where we might be going.

They are stories about this land, between the desert and the sea, defined by and beholden to both. Stories of our relationships with each other and with the rest of the world. The truth of our digitally complex, environmentally conscious, culturally diverse world and how we reconcile with it.

While the stories are intellectually complex, it is the visceral experiences that have the power to transform and define us.

Curating experiences is less straightforward than telling stories. No two people approach a Festival moment in the same way, and no four people will agree on the meaning – or indeed value – of the experience they just shared.

No two Festival journeys will be the same, and our hope is that your travels through this Festival will include experiences both intimate and epic. Experiences that whet the appetite and stimulate all five senses. Moments that allow us to remember something we all knew as children – that the map is not the territory, that the best discoveries are made by straying from the path or committing to a fantastic voyage.

Stories and experiences in perfect collision can propel us around the world in one Festival. In our constant search for and celebration of the extraordinary, we have looked far and near, seeking out ever new ways to harness the greatest talent from around the world and nurture the best artists from Western Australia.

Perth International Arts Festival is a beautiful and much loved thing, and I have been honoured to spend half a decade getting to know its character and its desires, and to have guided it to new places.

And so we come to another crossroads, and the beginning of our next great adventure …

Bon voyage.

Must-see gigs 2015: Caribou, Spoon, Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift and more

Must-see-gigs-2015-Caribou-Spoon-Black-Keys-Foo-Fighters-Taylor-Swift-and-more

The Big Day Out may have gone to the great backstage area in the sky and the Australian dollar has dived against the American currency, but the international live music options over the next 12 months in Melbourne and Sydney remain strong. Beginning with a strong and diverse summer touring season and culminating in the Taylor Swift experience at year's end, here are 10 notable shows to mark as possible big nights out on your calendar.

TAYLOR SWIFT
Now ensconced as one of pop music's central figures following the completion of her Nashville migration with the recent chart-topping success of the 1989 album, Taylor Swift returns to Australian stadiums 11 months from now, a period that will be filled with video clips, memes and headlines. Previous visits have highlighted, as with her songwriting, Swift's ability to render the orthodox personal and idiosyncratic, and fans are unlikely to be disappointed.

When:

  • November 28, ANZ Stadium, Homebush
  • December 11-12, AAMI Park, Melbourne

Tickets: $91.65-$173.21, ticketek.com.au | $91.65-$173.21, ticketek.com.au

FOO FIGHTERS
Dave Grohl appears to be searching for ever more detailed ways to inspire his studio albums, including last November's Sonic Highways, but the Foo Fighters frontman maintains a belief in rock music as a joyfully cathartic live experience that translates into volume, commitment, sweat, and hits when playing gigs. Most stadium acts rely on spectacle to fill the vast space between themselves and the audience, but Grohl still believes he can reduce it to the intimate through the band's performance.

When:

  • February 26, ANZ Stadium, Homebush NSW
  • February 28, Etihad Stadium, Docklands VIC

Tickets: $94.92-$202.88, ticketek.com.au | $97-$199, ticketmaster.com.au

SINEAD O'CONNOR
The wildcard. Sinead O'Connor has made headlines for many reasons over the last few years, including her clashes with the Catholic Church hierarchy, see-sawing mental health issues, and an awkward online dialogue with Miley Cyrus, but there has also been a recent pair of well-received album, most notably 2014's I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss, that have served as the springboard for the 48-year-old's renewed touring. O'Connor retains a remarkable voice, and a deeper catalogue of fine songs than you might think.

When:

  • March 19, Sydney Opera House
  • March 4, Hamer Hall, Arts Centre, Melbourne

Tickets: $79-$99, sydneyoperahouse.com | $82-128, ticketmaster.com.au

NENEH CHERRY WITH ROCKETNUMBERNINE
Neneh Cherry is in the midst of a resurgent second act in a career that began with groundbreaking sounds 25 years ago on the Raw Like Sushi album and subsequently went very quiet. Also playing at the Golden Plains music festival, the Londoner arrives with last year's Blank Project, her first solo album in 18 years and an exploration of sparsely affecting electronic music whose chief collaborators, synth duo RocketNumberNine, are touring with Cherry.

When:

  • March 11, Sydney Opera House, Sydney
  • March 6, Hamer Hall, Arts Centre, Melbourne

Tickets: $59-$79, sydneyoperahouse.com | $78-102, ticketmaster.com.au

DJ SHADOW & CUT CHEMIST
Do scratch this: the Renegade of Rhythm finds the two acclaimed music producers and DJs furthering their previous collaborations by taking to the stage with six turntables and vinyl drawn from the vast record collection of seminal New York DJ Afrika Bambaataa, the pioneer in beats who foresaw hip-hop and electronic music's fruitful relationship. DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist are also at Golden Plains, but their headline show should allow them to acknowledge the past while invoking the future.

When:

  • March 12, the Hi-Fi, Moore Park
  • March 6, Forum Theatre, Melbourne

Tickets: $70.50-$125.50, tickets.thehifi.com.au | $74.20, ticketmaster.com.au

THE BLACK KEYS
The Black Keys are familiar figures on Australian stages – this will be their eighth tour of the country. But each visit has brought a larger profile and the show to match it, and this time there's also the deep melancholy of 2014's Turn Blue album, which topped the Australian charts, to integrate into Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney's usually raucous live garage-blues experience.

When:

  • April 7, Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne;
  • April 10, Qantas Credit Union Arena, Darling Harbourn Sydney

Tickets: $109.70, ticketek.com.au | $107.56, ticketmaster.com.au

CARIBOU
The Canadian composer and musician Dan Snaith has enjoyed a successful career in electronic music since emerging as Manitoba at the turn of the century, but the warmth, eclectic grace and immersive precision of his last two albums – 2010's Swim and last year's acclaimed Our Love – have elevated him, into both the charts and the forefront of club and pop music's blissful integration. His Laneway Festival sideshow should give him room to dazzle.

When:

  • February 3, Sydney Opera House Sydney
  • February 5, Forum Theatre, Melboourne

Tickets: from $49, sydneyoperahouse.com | $69.90, ticketmaster.com.au;

SPOON
Spoon are at the veteran stage now, two decades into the band's career, but they continue to make outstanding albums thanks to the combination of Britt Daniel's songwriting and Jim Eno's studio expertise. Thankfully they don't tour as often as most American indie bands (ie. every 18 months), and their live shows allow for the band's intuitive cohesion and Daniel's stage flair to explore and expand their elegiac studio output.

When:

  • February 13, Metro Theatre, Sydney
  • February 11, Forum Theatre, Melbourne

Tickets: $61.17, ticketek.com.au | $63.20, ticketmaster.com.au

PERFUME GENIUS
One for the future: Seattle singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas, touring as part of the Laneway Festival, has released three album under the moniker of Perfume Genius, with the most recent – 2014's Too Bright – serving as a well-deserved breakthrough. Increasingly extroverted in his outlook and sounds, his music can take in starkly moving ballads and urgent, uneasy alternative rock with electronic edges. This could well be the last Perfume Genius gig he plays at a venue this size in Melbourne and Sydney.

When:

  • February 18, Oxford Art Factory, Darlinghurst NSW
  • February 15, Corner Hotel, Richmond VIC

Tickets: moshtix.com.au | $45,cornerhotel.com

DRAKE
In this age of perpetual touring due to negligible music sales, the Canadian hip-hop supremo is surprisingly only now playing his first headline shows in this country (he's also at Future Music Festival). In some ways the yin to Kanye West's yang, the Toronto-born rapper with an ear for R&B's vintage warmth has offered a new vision for hip-hop superstardom: more introverted than extroverted, open to emotion, welcoming in his success.

When:

  • February 25, Allphones Arena, Homebush NSW
  • February 27, Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne

Tickets: $11.94-$307.69, ticketek.com.au | $107.70-$151.05, ticketek.com.au

BANG FOR YOUR BUCKS

If you want to see as much music as possible in a concentrated amount of time, then it's a music festival (and sunscreen) for you. Four perennials to consider:
  • ST. JEROME'S LANEWAY FESTIVAL (February 7, Footscray Community Arts Centre; February 1, Sydney College of the Arts, Rozelle; $160) with Banks, Future Islands, FKA Twigs, Caribou and Flying Lotus.
  • SOUNDWAVE (February 21-22, Melbourne Showgrounds; February 28-March 1; $132 for one day, $188 for two) with Faith No More, Smashing Pumpkins, Slipknot and Soundgarden.
  • GOLDEN PLAINS (Saturday 7 to Monday 9 March, Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre, $328.80) with Conor Oberst, Sharon Van Etten, Felice Brothers, and Village People.
  • FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL (March 8, Flemington Racecourse; February 28, Royal Randwick Racecourse; $149 to $345) with Avicii, The Prodigy, Drake, Nero and Afrojack.
